| A Marietta couple was killed Friday after their car collided with a minivan and flipped on its side at a Rapho Township intersection. |
| Robert C. Spangler, 81, and his wife, Mary Ann Spangler, 77, were pronounced dead at the scene at 1:30 p.m. by Lancaster County Deputy Coroner Dr. Miles G. Newman. |
| The Spanglers were driving south on Meadow View Road in a 1990 Subaru Legacy when they approached the West Elizabethtown Road intersection at 12:41 p.m., state police said. |
| Spangler drove the Subaru into the intersection and apparently did not yield the right of way at the stop sign, said Trooper Thomas Yates, of state police at Ephrata. |
| As the Subaru entered the intersection, a 1988 Plymouth Voyager, driven by Wayne M. Achey, 41, of Manheim, was headed west on West Elizabethtown Road. The Subaru pulled into the path of the Plymouth, Yates said. |
| The impact forced the Subaru to roll onto its passenger side and into the southwest corner of the intersection. The Plymouth spun 180 degrees and flipped onto its roof before again slamming into the Subaru. |
| A state police accident reconstruction team probed the intersection until 6:30 p.m. Friday. |
| There were eight passengers in Achey's car, three adults and five children. |
| Achey was with his wife, Suzanne Achey, 40, of Manheim, and their four children, Candice Achey, 17, David Achey, 15, Benjamin Achey, 11, and Seth Achey, 9. |
| Kevin McCracken, 31, and his wife, Anne McCracken, 31, both of Germany, also were riding in the Plymouth with their 1-year-old son, Josiah McCracken. |
| Everyone in the Plymouth but David Achey was wearing a seatbelt or a safety seat at the time of the accident, police said. |
| Firefighters from Manheim and Mastersonville spent four hours extricating the Spanglers from the Subaru. An autopsy on the couple is scheduled for 7 a.m. today. |
| Kevin McCracken, Anne McCracken and Josiah McCracken were taken to Lancaster General Hospital and treated for minor injuries. |
| David Achey suffered a minor cut on his right knee and Seth Achey suffered a cut on his head. |
| Wayne Achey and Benjamin Achey were taken to Lancaster General Hospital. Suzanne Achey and Candice Achey were taken to Milton S. Hershey Penn State Medical Center. |
| All nine people were released from Lancaster and Hershey Friday night. |
| The Spanglers were active historians. They conducted informational slide shows for Elizabethtown Historical Society and lectured on a number of subjects, including the history and preservation of Marietta. |
| The couple also opened its 26 Fairview Ave. home to visitors during the Marietta Candlelight Tour of holiday-decorated homes in 1998 and participated in protests against a Marietta Borough Council proposal to widen the street in front of their home. |
