In 1997 the Marietta Area Ambulance Association will be celebrating 35 years of service to the Borough of Marietta , PA and the surrounding area.

When one looks at the history of a town, the events that ultimately come to mind are the major disasters that have struck the town over the years.

Although fire fighting companies or brigades were formed in the United States at a very early period in our history, the Pioneer Fire Company of Marietta, PA was incorporated in 1840, formal emergency medical services were long in coming.

In early times, the event of sickness or injury meant that the local doctor was summoned or the patient was transported to his office.   The coming of the American Civil War brought massive reforms in emergency medicine that included the use of ambulance corps and trained personnel.

When news of the battle at Gettysburg arrived in Marietta, the residents banded together to fill 2 wagons with bread and other food, as well as bandaging materials.   These wagons were dispatched to Gettysburg with instructions that the supplies were to be used for the Union wounded.

In the 1920's hospitals in the larger cities began providing ambulance service.   They were usually staffed with a driver and a doctor, but it seemed that there were never enough to go around.

By the late 1950's, Marietta boasted a privately owned community ambulance service.    The service was very primitive by today's standards.   What is jokingly referred to today as a   "You call - We haul"   service, but it was state of the art for those times.

In 1962, Marietta celebrated its sesquicentennial.   The activities were Coordinated by the Marietta Sesquicentennial Committee , Inc.     After the celebration was finished, the committee met to decide what to do next.   They agreed that since the community ambulance association was inadequate and suffering from other problems at this time, they would take over the service in an attempt to provide better emergency medical services to the residents of the borough.

They changed their name from the Marietta Sesquicentennial Committee to the Marietta Area Ambulance Association and purchased a used Cadillac ambulance.

Over the years, the ambulance association has grown along with the emergency medical service.   They went from the Cadilliac style ambulance to a van type, and now to the modular or box type ambulance.

The personnel requirements have elevated from the 8 hour Red Cross first aid course to the PA Dept. of Health Emergency Medical Technician course entailing over 125 hours, along with continuing education classes.

The black leather "doctor bag" and oxygen bottle have been replaced by so much specialized medical equipment that it would take volumes to list it all.

The days of   "You call - We haul"   are over.    Now it's treat the patient on the scene and then transport.

The Marietta Area Ambulance Association has met the challenges over the years and are ready to provide state of the art emergency medical care whenever they are called upon.    We congratulate the Marietta Ambulance on their 35th. anniversary, and wish them continued success in the future.
